It was January 2009 and Fulham were playing West Ham United and I was trying to figure out which football club was going to be mine. (I was told once that you don't pick a team, it picks you.) Paul Konchesky raised down the left from his fullback position and scored an amazing goal. That drew me in. It helped that Konchesky is bald (so am I), and they were playing in red socks (red is my favorite color).
The next week they played at home against Portsmouth. Fulham's home stadium is called Craven Cottage, where there is an actually "cottage" in one corner of the stadium. Add to it that the stands are right next to the Thames. It looked beautiful. (My dream is to go one day.) What helped that year was that Clint Dempsey was an American star playing for them, and this caused Fox Sports to put them on TV regularly.
Yes, they made a huge run in the Europa League the next season where they made the final and beat huge clubs to get there, but I was already hooked.
When they got relegated from the Premier League in 2014 I was not pleased. I wouldn't be able to watch them for a while. But then they made it back for a year and I made sure to watch them any time they were on TV. Last year they found themselves in the Championship again, after being relegated in their first year back in the Premier League.
Now...Come on you Whites!!!! Back into the Premier League after just a year! I listened to Extra Time on my way home from a pastoral visit and screamed when Joe Bryan's goal went in. Then he scores again. I am so excited to be able to see my beloved Fulham again. Add in that my favorite player for Fulham, Scott Parker, is the manager. He teared up at the end of the game and calls this his greatest accomplishment in sport. Love it!
